2024 General Education Teaching Awardees

Elizabeth Dewitte

Since joining the University of Utah in 1998, Professor Elizabeth Dewitte has exemplified the transformative power of General Education. Her signature course, The Language of Color, goes beyond color theory to explore how color shapes cultural identities, social structures, and personal experiences. She is known for fostering open, respectful dialogue—even in online classes—creating spaces where students feel heard, connected, and inspired. Her students praise her ability to bring complex ideas to life, while colleagues admire her dedication to curriculum development, mentorship, and innovative teaching. Through her passion and commitment, Professor Dewitte has made a lasting impact on students, faculty, and the broader university community. Congratulations to Professor Dewitte, a true model of excellence in General Education.

General Education Teaching Awards

Instructors of courses carrying any of the following designations are eligible for these awards: AI, BF, FF, HF, LS, PS, CW, DV, IR, DI, QI as well as courses that meet the lower division Math or Writing requirements. Instructors who teach general education courses are eligible for these awards.

The General Education Curriculum Committee is revising the GE Teaching Awards. The next opportunity for nomination will be Spring 2026.

Innovation

The Teaching Award for Innovation in General Education recognizes innovation approaches to general education. Innovative pedagogy is new, original, or forward thinking and may entail: a student-centered or inquiry-based approach to pedagogy; integrated instructional practices that help studies connect coursework to their life experiences, interests, passion, and aspirations; community-engaged learning to bridge the classroom and community; interesting uses of technology for engagement; cooperative and collaborative learning; and creative incorporation of global issues or diversity into the curriculum.

Excellence

The Teaching Award for Excellence in General Education recognizes teaching that makes a significant contribution to the U’s mission to provide undergraduate students with an exceptional education experience in General Education. The instructors being nominated for this award should have at least five years of experience teaching within General Education.
