Transition FAQ

Q. Do students need to complete the Experiential Learning (EL) requirement?

A. The original plan for the new General Education and Baccalaureate requirement structure included an Experiential Learning (EL) requirement. However, the EL requirement has been put on hold indefinitely. Students are not required to complete an EL requirement at this time.

Q. When will the old GE and BD requirements no longer be an option for students?

A.  Students on OLD GE and BD requirements must graduate by Summer 2028 if they want to graduate under the old/current requirements. Beginning Fall 2028, all students must complete the new GE and Baccalaureate requirements.

Q. What happens if a student returns to the U without a leave of absence or after a prolonged break? Will the students have to complete the new GE requirements?

A.  Students who attended the U before Fall 2024 will have the option to complete the Old GE requirements if they are declared in a major with a Catalog Year of Fall 2024 or earlier. A student could declare their major later than Fall 2024, but the assigned Catalog Year must be Fall 2025 or earlier to complete the Old GE requirements.

Q. If an exception was made on the Degree Audit for a transfer course to fulfill a GE or BD requirement on the Old GE requirements and the student decides to migrate to the New GE requirements will the transfer exception need to be reentered?

A.  The Office of the Registrar will make a copy of the previously entered exception and code the copy with the new GE designation so the exception will apply under the Old and New requirements.

Q. Are the Breadth Area requirements (previously known as Intellectual Exploration requirements) satisfied with an AA/AS degree?

A.  Yes. An AA or AS degree will automatically clear the Breadth Area requirements. This is not true for AAS (Associate of Applied Science) degrees.

Q. How will students on the Old GE requirements find courses to fulfill requirements such as QB, SF, or QR that no longer exist?

A.  Courses will no longer be coded with QB, SF, AS, or QR/QA/QB beginning in Fall 2024. Students who need to fulfill these requirements should select from the available list of courses on Degree Audit with a Catalog Year that shows the Old GE requirements (Fall 2023/24 or earlier).
